Walking around today, I noticed a couple of things. One just made me laugh, the other was kind of sad. Dalian has an area called 奥林匹克广场, or Olympic Square. On my way to this area, I took a bus for a bit, and the stop I got off at is aptly named, "Sports Square." Here's a picture of the bus stop:
That's what made me laugh.
Olympic Square isn't the biggest of areas in Dalian, but it is pretty well packed with things to do. There's a good-sized, though nearly empty, mall, a Starbucks, Electronic City, some nice-ish hotels, and, most notably, a very large football stadium ... well, that is until now. I've known the football stadium was slated for demolition, but I didn't think that I'd ever witness it. Today, I witnessed it ... well part of it.
The stadium, though pretty useless as the Dalian football team plays somewhere else now, was a pretty nice looking building. There were also some pretty good sporting goods shops there, too. I'm not sure what the land is slated for, probably another hotel or over-priced housing complex, either way, one of Dalian's last visible sporting vestiges is no more.
