Ever since I got my first RC car when I was very young, I've wanted to dive deeper into RC and become a serious hobbyist. For those who don't know what RC is, it's short for Radio Control. I've had a couple of cars, but I've always wanted to get into RC flying. I've never really considered it, seriously, until recently when they've become less expensive (not so expensive that I would have to sell my internal organs on the black market to get one) and the technology is getting more in-line with what I had in mind, RC planes with video cameras mounted on them ... I already love taking photos and video. Lately, I've been watching a lot of RC videos on YouTube (at work) and Youku from home, and it's really making me want to get into this. Here's an example of some of those videos (requires a browser that supports HTML5 encoding ... if you see your browser sucks instead of a video, your browser doesn't support HTML5).
This video is from an HD camera mounted on a RC helicopter.
This video is from an HD camera mounted on a RC plane. This one takes an extra step that I think is really cool and adds a teddy bear to the equation, and a steering column that actually moves with the planes controls making the teddy look like it's really controlling the plane.
These videos came from Radio Control Air Pictures which is based in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, Japan, does a really good job of what I'd like to do if I seriously got into the hobby. If you couldn't view the above videos and don't want to upgrade your browser (Google Chrome or Apple Safari work best), you can visit their YouTube page here.
If there are any RC hobbyists that read this, leave a comment, let me know what you like about it and what it would take to get into it.
