Snu

The title refers to a very corny joke told in an episode of M*A*S*H by Captain (though he prefers doctor) Hawkeye Pierce. He's operating on a soldier and he asks for a scalpel, then he asks for a sponge, then he finally asks for a "snu." The nurse is a little confused and asks "What's snu?" to which Pierce quickly comes back with "Nothing, what's new with you?" Ha ha, not that funny, I know, but it tickled my funny joint enough to make me think of it when I was thinking of a title for this post. So, if you haven't figured out yet, this post is about what's new with me. Well, for about 1 week now, I have been the proud owner of my very first Apple computer ... a Macbook Pro. My inner geek has been bound and chained in the basement so you don't have to put up with all the technical stuff ... you know, specs, OSx version, etc etc ... I just want to tell you why I bought a Mac instead of something that would be equally sufficient at a much lower price. So, without further ado, next paragraph (I never know when to separate paragraphs, this just makes it easy Cool ).

I've been using a Dell desktop that I purchased in 2001 with Ubuntu installed. Lately, it's been making a lot of unnatural noises ... you know, squeaking fans, clicking hard drives, loud power supply, etc ... so I decided it was getting high time for a new computer. Now, living in a place I don't plan on spending the rest of my life in (if you follow me on Twitter, you'd know this), I didn't want to get a desktop PC or Mac, I wanted something I could take with me where ever I decide to go next. So, I'm limited to laptops, and since I already have a netbook, I'm limited to the "better" laptops. I've also been an avid Ubuntu user for about 2 years as I hate anything that says Windows on it. So, a little over a year ago when I finally decided on Linux (specifically Ubuntu) as my favorite OS, I swore I would not use, or pay for, Windows on (for) any of my own computers, for the fore-seeable future. So, my choices have been limited either further, I'm looking for a laptop without Windows ... why pay for the Windows CoA if you're going to wipe the drive 5 minutes after you unpackage it and put a free Linux on it anyway? So, basically, my choices have been limited to a Chinese made computer with a fake Windows OS on it, or a Mac. Rather than mess with a Chinese brand computer (been there, been burned), I opted for a Mac. I like learning new operating systems, and I like that it's not Windows. I also liked that it will allow me to free up my desktop (until it croaks) and install a server edition of Linux on it so I can set up a file server in my home ... Yeah! Something else I get to learn! I actually like to learn new things, just don't get the opportunity all that often ... unless I want to try to learn Chinese again.

In short, I'm happy with my purchase and I'm happy that this will force me to learn some new skills that I might, just might, get to apply later on in my life. I'm also happy that I've finally got something at home that will natively sync with my iPhone (stupid Apple and their refusal to build anything Linux).

Ok, tired of typing, should be sleeping, later.
